We are two couples in our early 60s. None of us has bee to South America and we'd like to take about two weeks in Sept or Oct to go. We would welcome suggestions for what tonsee and here to go. Initial thoughts are Rio de Janero, Iguaza Falls, Buenos Aires and we'd also love to see at least a bit of Patagonia. Thanks!

With just two weeks I would stick to Argentina and forget about Rio. If you provide more info on your likes, dislikes and interests you will probably get more focused and relevant responses. We were in Argentina from Oct to December and founs it to be a great time to visit with superb weather in all regions we visited.
Highlights for me (in no particular order!)were Iguazu - needs 2 days, Salta - needs 5 -6, BA and the seven lakes area from San Martin to Bailoche. We also really like Peninsular Valdes for the whales but that is a long way to go.
I really regret not visiting El Calafate, Perito Merino etc. (but I suppose that provides a very good reason to return!
latinamericaforless.com great sample itineraries.
Rio Iguazu Buenos Aires totally doable in the time
you have.Great personal experience with spg.com Sheratons there.
Splurge for a falls view room at Sheraton Iguazu you will
not regret it. El Calafate/Patagonia (vast) would be a little
crammed make more time or skip it.
Happy Planning!
I agree that sticking to ARG is a good idea. IF Is spectacular and two night is a good amount of time to spend there. El Calafate is a great place to visit and if you enjoy hiking going to Torres de Paine in Chile from there would be fabulous. Alternately you could go to el Chalten which is supposed to have great hiking. I missed going to el Chalten and regret not getting there.
Also agree that Salra region is beautiful. I would want to spend 5-7 days there, but many people go for 4 days. U can fly between IF and Salta without going thru BA which is a nice timesaver.
Bariloche didn't wow me but enjoyed San Martin de los Andes. This link has our TR from Barioche, el Calfate & Torres de Paine, Chile.
