Is Colombia safe?

Jump to last reply

I am planning a trip to South America and was thinking about destinations. Lonely Planet claims that Columbia is today one of South America's safest countries (in their Colombia book). Obviously these people also want to sell books though, so I am not sure how accurate that is. Anyone I tell I am thinking about going to Columbia looks at me like I want to become a drug trager, which I try not to be incluenced by, but after a while it makes you wonder.
Anyone has been there recently? I realize it is not Switzerland, but for a single traveler, is safety a major concern? Are there a lot of places/areas you cannot go to, because they are dangerous?
