Hi
Am I asking for trouble?
I am flying to Santiago via IAD first, then MIA, then Santiago. Our connection in MIA is kind of short I think.
My connection time is 1.5 hours total. We land at 855 PM (domestic flight) and then we take off for Santiago at 1030 sharp.
This means I have to get off the plane and across the MIA airport in one hour so that I am at the gate by 10 PM.
When we went to Lima I remember it was almost a disaster. For whatever reason Dulles didn't give us tickets from MIA to Lima (even though we asked) and we had to walk for FOR BLOODY EVER to get to the international terminal, get our tickets printed, stand in line for security, and then RUN to get to the gate.
For anyone who has done the IAD-MIA-SCL route, is 1.5 hours TOTAL enough? This assumes we even land on time, if we do not, guess we won't be in Chile the next morning.
IAD-MIA-SCL, connection: 1.5 hours total from wheels down to wheels up

Did you buy it as one ticket? If you did, then your luggage is tagged all the way through and you wouldn't have to collect it. They are supposed to leave you enough time to make the connection. They would give you both boarding passes in IAD. However, if you bought the two tickets separately you are going to have to pick up your luggage and check in for your next flight. If you miss the second flight you are not the responsibility of either airline. One contracts to get you to MIA and the other contracts to get you to SCL. If you bought it as one ticket, they have contracted to get you from IAD to SCL and it is up to them to do that.
Are you flying LAN all the way? I've made a number of connections at Santiago aiport, mainly going on to Brazil from Australia, and it is a very efficient airport. Often there are airline reps in the disembarking corridor who whisk people off for tight connections.
Oh sorry misread your post, you final destination is Santiago. I'm no help!
I think the travel agent (work trip) did one ticket. It's UA and then LAN.
If it is one ticket you should be fine. Call and ask. People get into trouble when they search around for cheaper fares and book in single, unconnected tickets. Thus each airline is only responsible for their flight and not for getting you between them and others. Your TA will know how it was booked. Have a great trip (even if you have to do a bit of work!).
It may be a codeshere with LAN and AA. I asked about a similar connection in SFO and LAN said "they will help you at the airport if there is a problem".
All I can think, is, I hope the help is better than in their ticketing back office.
