Hi all,
I'm looking for hotel recommendations in Rio. I was hoping for something beachfront or very close to the beach. Which beach is better in terms of hotel location, safety, and shopping, etc?
thanks!

You definitely want to stay in the more upscale neighborhoods of Ipanema or Leblon. The area around Copacabana is pretty seedy once you move away from the beach. We stayed in Copacabana for a week since it was a forced conference hotel. The Excelsior Copacabana was a good hotel but we didn't like the neighborhood and every evening went somewhere else for dinner. In Ipanema we stayed at the Hotel Ipanema Plaza and liked both the hotel and the location for eating, shopping and overall feel. For more info see

Yes, you should definitely focus on Ipanema and Leblon. While there are many hotels in Rio, price/value combinations are not great. Many hotels are on the older side and haven't kept up with renovations. Yet, due to demand and the lack of land to build new hotels, choices are limited. One property to look at is the Everest RIo, next to the Ceasar Park. Also, look at the Marina Palace perhaps. The Fasano is an option is cost is no object and you want a very "in place." Chairs and umbrellas are available for rent all along the beach. Taxis are relatively inexpensive and safe. Have fun, Rio is great.
Another viable option would be apartment rentals. You should be able to rent a 1 bedroom apt. for less than a hotel room might charge you.
Thanks for your responses!
I can recommend Praia Ipanema Hotel in, obviously, Ipanema. Great beachfront hotel and all the rooms have balconies--which is surprisingly rare in Rio. Clean, modern place in a good neighborhood. More info and pics from our Rio trip at http://patrinadoestheglobe.blogspot.com/
