Honeymoon - 4 weeks - Argentina and ?????

Hello All!

I was wondering if someone could help me out.

My fiance and I are going to take 4 weeks off for our honeymoon (leaving either mid-December or late December) and would like to go visit Argentina (and possibly another country). We've booked nothing yet but are going to get on that very soon.

What we're looking for is great food (we LOVE good food!), beautiful scenery (nature & architecture), some adventure (e.g. hikes), some nightlife and a beach time (around a week on the beach).

Now, I've read that Argentina's beaches aren't great. Where would you recommend that we go to for that week of beach time? I'm content with staying in Argentina (pls share thoughts on best beaches) but if there's somewhere else that you think we should go to instead of Argentina, I'd love to hear from too. I'm thinking of neighbouring countries rather than travelling extremely far for the beach! I've heard that Punta del Este, Uruguay has great beaches but it's way out of budget as we'll be there in peak season.

Also, I would totally welcome thoughts on how we could spend our three non-beach weeks in Argentina!!

Thank you in advance for your help to my questions !

Firstly, congratulations on your fortcoming marriage!
We spent 5 months in SA last year of which 3 were spent in Argentina.

I cant help with beach suggestion but for the rest I would suggest considering :

Salta and the North West- The most amazing scenery, great people food etc. I suggest renting a car and driving a circuit around the area Hunhuaca, Tilcara, Purmamarca, Salinas grandes, Cachi etc. Plenty of opportunities for hiking and some great places to stay along the way. Qiute simply my favourite place in SA. 7 days would be ideal but you could do it in 5. If you are feeling adventurous you could also consider a side trip into Bolivia from this area

You will want to spend some time in BA which has the nightlife you seek and also provides the opportunity for some side trips to maybe Colonia de Sacremento in Uruaguay (either a day trip or overnight). A visit to Iguazu falls could be made from here (2 nights)- once seen never forgotten!

Another place we loved was the Argentine Lake district. We did teh seven lakes drive from San Martin de Los Andes to Bariloche. A beautiful if challenging drive!

If you are into wildlife then Peninsular Valdes is worth the trip to see the whales and penguins at very close quarters. it is maybe worth 2/3 days but it is a long way from anywhere.

One place I do regret not getting to was the glacier at El Calafate which looks spectacular.

The place for food and wine would have to be Mendoza with some great restaurant option at all levels.

Cant really comment on the beaches as I am not really a beach person but Uruguay would seem to be your best bet.

Here is a link to our blog of our trip which has some more info, photos etc.

Congrats on the marriage!

Bariloche and northern Patagonia have a great mix of nature and excellent restaurants and a wonderful place to spend a honeymoon. Here is a blog post my wife did on romance in Patagonia. http://livinginpatagonia.com/?p=202

Congrats! I agree with Crellston comments on the NW of Argentina and Iguazu Falls. A week or even 10 days in BA with some side trips to the Tigre Delta and an estancia for an overnight or 2 would be great followed by 2 nights in IF and then fly to the NW and spend a week or so exploring that area. Just love Argentina, beautiful country, great wine and food and fabulous people.

Hello,congratulations!
By all means, after visiting Argentina, take your beach trip in Uruguay. Punta del este is expensive , but there are wonderful and not so expensive beautiful beaches to visit and/or stay.
All of them within 150 miles from the capital city Montevideo.
You can either cross the River Plate by plane or boat to Colonia del Sacramento, a really interesting historical place, and then continue for 120 miles to Montevideo. From there on, you can find quiet and beautiful beaches either in the river or in the ocean (after punta del este, which you can enjoy without staying there.
If you like real nature you will find Cabo Polonio or la Pedrera beaches, with very good food and affordable hotels,
cabins or lodges.
I live here and am a tourist guide. Any questions or information I'll be glad to help,
Wish you a nice trip.

Beaches in Argentina.
Though we have nice seaside resorts, the beaches in Argentina are not the best. Uruguayan coasts are much better. therefore prices are much higher. December is not the most demanded month unless it is at Xmas. Avoid those days then and go before. You will love the nature of the distant beaches there. Maybe you should try Jose Ignacio, the top of all the places and more affordable in December. Punta del Este is really nice and if you can have some days there you will not regret it.

Thank you to EVERYONE for your most wonderful advice! You've given me a lot of helpful information -- time to start drafting up an itinerary. Thank you thank you thank you.

My itinerary will have to however been tentative for the time being My fear now is H1N1 and the travel advisory that has been issued. Hoping that it will be contained by December.

Hello!

Congratulations on your honeymoon... Latin America is the perfect place to celebrate it! For your beach time I would recommend you look into Brazil, the beaches in Argentina arent that special, or... you could head down to Punta del Este which is a young, party beach in Uruguay, but only takes 5 hours from Buenos Aires!
In terms of nature in Argentina alone you have Bariloche (lakes and mountains), Iguazu (waterfalls), El Calafate (glaciers), Salta (colonial towns, arid landscape) Mendoza (vineyards and beautiful green countryside) and Ushuiua (penguins!)... not to mention the endless possibilities in Buenos Aires! I would recommend you take at least one day tour in BA, its a great way to get into the culture and make the most of your stay, the extra info and insight REALLY makes it more enjoyable! Argentina is famous for its food and wine so that will be in abundance! If you're looking for good nightlife head to Palermo Soho or Palermo Hollywood in Buenos Aires... its FULL of restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs, mostly very decent ones too! Or if you want something a bit more expensive and exclusive, do some exploring in Recoleta!
Don't worry about the virus, its under control now and since winter is slowly becoming spring the virus is also slowing down, all you have to do is complete a short form at the customs section,so dont panic!

Have a great trip!

hi! this is funny b/c we are planning a honeymoon in Jan/Feb. Ours is about 3 weeks, but we are doing our beach time in Florianapolis, Brazil instead! We figured out that 1) the beaches are more beautiful and 2) that the travel time/expense is the same as heading to Uruguay.

We got a triangle ticket, so our arrival is in FLN, but we return home from EZE. Just an idea! Congrats!
