Hiking from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
Does anyone know if it is possible to hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu instead of taking the bus? I seem to be finding conflicting information. My husband and I are pretty athletic and would like to hike it if it seems safe and realistic. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

Have done it was not that great UP hill ok downhill
there is a staircase straight up or you can do the road with
bus diesel fumes up switchbacks not vertical
If you have acess to Google Earth you can go to MP and
see the route of the hike...
Best to go up early by bus $7 for the sunrise
do the HP climb a GREAT hike...
then skip the bus and hike/walk DOWNHILL back to AC
save $7 per person and not as tough pretty nice that way

It is a fair distance (I'll guess at least 2-3 miles) down the valley before you reach the foot of the trail. The other poster is correct, it is a stair case, but you have to cross the road each time it switch backs. The buses move a long at a fair pace and there are a couple of service trucks. Also remember you are at altitude to begin with so you are going up another 2000+ feet on that stair case. To me it is worth the $14 round trip on the bus. There is more than enough hiking around the site.
