I am planning a two vacation for my husband and I for the first two weeks of September 2009. Our tentative itinerary (nothing booked yet) is 4-5 mights Machu Picchu/Sacred Valley (not doing a trek), 2-3 nights Amazon (either out of Manus or Puerto Maldonado) and 1 night in Lima. After that we'd love to decompress at a beach somewhere that is not totally out of the way to NY, for 4-5 nights. I'm worried about the Carribean and Mexico because of hurricane season. Some options that seem feasible (in terms of flights and weather) are Panama (direct flights to Lima and NY) and Venezuela (stopovers in Bogota).
I would love any input on these beach destinations - or any others we should consider from Peru. We're in our late 20s and we're equally open to a low-key beach town and a swanky resort - as long as there is a great beach! Good scuba diving is also a plus.
Also looking for any recommendations about doing a jungle trip from Manus or Puerto Maldanado - is there a big difference in these two areas? The fancy-ness of the lodge we choose there will probably be inversely related to the price of our beach hotel!
Thanks so much! (I will also post in the Central America forum)
