Cusco and Peruvian rainforest in April / May

Jump to last reply

Just starting to research a trip to Peru in April or May 2014. We have a friend who's family will put us up in Cusco, and show us around the area. We will have 2 weeks to spend in Peru. We will do Machu Picchu of course. I would also like to visit the rain forest in the east of Peru in the amazon basin. Was hoping to get some feedback on what kind of costs we would be looking at for a rain forest trip from Cusco, staying in moderate accommodations, doesn't need to be fancy, but allowing for treks in the rain forest with guides to see animals and birds. Perhaps there are decent lower budget tours from Cusco that we could take because of our limited time.
Also other recommended sites to see in the Cusco area.
I like to hike, so am considering a trek on the Inca Trail, or one of the smaller trails. I understand it needs to be booked months in advance.
