I have a friend who's currently living in Paraguay who wants to visit me here in New Zealand in February/March of 2005. She lives in a rural area and doesn't have access to travel agents or the internet, so I've been looking around for the best deal on an airfare here but can only come up with a price of USD$1360 for a return ticket (Asuncion -> Auckland) on Aerolineas Argentinas, which seems very high. It's been suggested to me that Aerolineas doesn't allow foreign customers to access their lower rates, so I figure it must be cheaper to buy the ticket in Paraguay, or perhaps even a travel agent in Chile or Argentina that will accept an international purchase. Does anyone know of such a travel agency that I could contact? What is/are their email address(es)?
Also, can anyone give me an idea of what a reasonably priced fare from ASU->AKL would be? (One purchased in South America that is).
Thanks in advance for your help,
Matt

I can't answer your specific questions about prices, but the $1360 doesn't surprise me. Much as I like Paraguay, it isn't exactly well connected to the rest of the world. (Maybe that's exactly what I like about the place.) There are flights only a couple of times a day each to Sao Paulo (with connections there to Miami) and Buenos Aires. Other than that, the airport serves flights to La Paz and Montevideo, both of which are also out-of-the-way places with few connections to many places. There just aren't a lot of options, and that usually means few discounts to choose from.
There may be travel agents in Asuncion who could tackle the question and come up with something.
