Carribean to Argentina or Uruguay
Hello, in trying to plan a honeymoon for May 2014. We would love to travel around Argentina but want to relax on a beach for a few days beforehand. Does anyone know where we can go in the Carribean or even Mexico of Belize that has a flight to Buenos Aires or even Monteviedo or Iguazu? Everything I find requires a layover in the U.S., which seems crazy! The beaches in Argentina and Punta del Este are not warm enough that time of year. Thanks!

You're looking for something that doesn't exist. The Caribbean is well connected to the U.S., but not as much to South America and certainly not far-southern South America. I'm sure it's all about markets. If people in Argentina were really interested in the Caribbean, there would be direct flights, but when they have great beaches nearby in Uruguay and Brazil, not many need to go to the Caribbean. Connecting in the U.S. is your best bet.

Actually, I live in Mendoza, Argentina, and lots of Argentineans going to both Cancun and Dominican Republic throughout the year. Many of these flights go through Panama City, but many direct as well. Check on Despegar.com for flights, but NEVER use despegar to buy anything.

Caribbean is a very big place. Aruba and Curaçao have good connections with USA and direct flights to Colombia (Bogota, airline Avianca) and Panama (airline Copa). Best of all, both are outside the hurricane belt (by the way, may is the beginning of the hurricane season in Caribbean).
The colombian caribbean coast is another option, which is also outside of the hurricane belt. San Andres is a very beautiful place and Cartagena is another place of interest. From Colombia I'm pretty sure you'll reach Argentina and Uruguay easily.
Not sure if I would recommend Venezuela for americans.
We brazilians have access to very nice beaches, but caribbean is unbeatable. Most brazilians dream to go there someday.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! It doesn't necessarily have to be the Carribean. We just want a couple days on the beach and have heard that Brazil and Venezuela and Colombia are all pretty dangerous for Americans. Thoughts?

Socialist Venezuela of course is not a country where americans are welcome, take our time to listen one of Chavez speaches (and Maduro's are pretty much the same, I suppose). Also, there are some reports about luggage being stolen in Caracas airport. However, if you manage to reach Los Roques, you'll see a peaceful island with some of the best beaches in the whole Caribbean.
Colombia is not that dangerous country that used to be, but I don't know if FARC may still be an issue nowadays.
Brazil is not a dangerous country, only a few areas in some cities are dangerous for everyone, even ourselves. Same is true about Argentina.
