Carnival in Uruguay

Have been reading about Carnival in Uruguay and have a couple of questions.
1. Seems like lots of activitiy in Montevideo. Will there also be celebrations in Colonia? Perhaps other towns too?
2. How wonderful that Uruguay's Carnival lasts 40 days or more. Are there specific dates that are the major celebrations days?
