Buying show tickets to Cafe Tortoni
I plan to attend the 8pm Tango show at Cafe Tortoni either on December 19 or December 20.
I don't see a way to purchase show tickets online from the cafe's website.
If I must go to the cafe in person to buy tickets, do you know if I can buy advanced tickets or can I only buy same-day tickets?
Thanks in advance.

We visited in September and called to reseve tickets a couple of days beforehand. We had to call in to pay for them the day before. It does pay to book in advampnce as they sell the better tables on a first come basis.
As Marnie suggests, do take the opportunity to grab a coffee as it is quite some place. If you can, try to make it on a Sunday when the show is in the smaller upstairs room rather than in general basement.

As I've suggested numerous times, Tortoni is an elegant ancient venue and certainly worth a visit. However, my wife and I enjoyed Sunday in San Telmo district for an array of "on the street" tango dancing. More fun than Tortoni....unless you are an aficionado. Have since sent several family and friends to the San Telmo venue which they all enjoyed.

Forgot to mention that I was a little disappointed when we visited in sept. Previously we had really enjoyed the live band, especially the virtuoso accordion player. This time the music was recorded - just not the same!

Hello Tower: unfortunately, the 3 days we'll be in BA does not span a Sunday.
Hello crellston: was that the 8 o'clock show that you went that was not a live band? If that is the case then we'll have to look for some other venue.

Hi Reading54, sorry but I can't recall what day of the week it was, probably a Wednesday. It was definitely the 8pm show in the downstairs room. The show consisted of two couples and a singer and was very staged/theatrical and, quiet frankly not as good as the show we saw in the upstairs room a few years previously.
There are some photos of that show on our old blog @ http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog...5620/tpod.html
There is also a little narrative on the experience.
I did look at other shows and whilst some look very good the were also outrageously expensive!

Thanks crellston. I read your old blog a few months back after I started browsing the Argentina board to look for information about BA.
I recognize yours and tower's screen names from your posts on the Japan board.

We've gone two times. The first time we were upstairs and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Second time we were downs, tails and it was just okay. It has been a few years since we were there. I love Tango so I'm pretty happy when I see it anywhere.

Based on your feedback, as well as from the Cafe's web page,
http://www.cafetortoni.com.ar/en/?p=shows
From Monday - Friday, the shows are at "Sala La Bodega", my guess is that it is the "downstairs" room.
On Saturdays and Sundays the shows are at "Sala Alfonsina Storni", my guess is that it is the "upstairs" room.
So buyer beware.
