Buses in Rio

Hi,

Are buses in Rio safe? I'm thinking about taking the bus from the airport to Ipanema. I'm also thinking about going to Ilha Grande, Paraty, and Buzios. Is it safe to take the bus to these locations from Rio? Thanks.

I've had no problems using buses in Brazil. The inter-city buses are very comfortable and reasonably priced.

OK for th einter city. For trips inside Rio, use a cab but make sure they use the meter.

No reason not to use the bus. Millions do every day.

I agree with Carlos. I have used local buses and inter-city ones, they were both cheap and efficient.

Hi jjdof,

Don't worry about these buses you'll need to take.
First of all, taking a bus it's the cheapest way to reach Ipanema from the GIG Intl Airport. Look for the bus stop just outside the airport building (near the taxis). "REAL" it's the name of the bus company. It's a white bus with blue and gold letters on it. Any person could give you the directions and a lot of people speaks english.
The fare costs R$ 7,00 (seven reais), that is about USD 4,00.
The bus is extremely safe, comfortable and with AC. I don't know where you have to go exactly, but these are the Ipanema streets where the bus may stop for you:
ATLANTICA,AV.
RAINHA ELIZABETH,AV.
VIEIRA SOUTO,AV.
DELFIM MOREIRA,AV.

Ilha Grande, Búzios and Paraty are other cities. Búzios, for instance, is about 2 hours from Rio de Janeiro. The buses are quite safe to these places.

I hope you enjoy your staying here in Brazil.

We loved taking the buses in Rio, but we did avoid them at night as we'd read that that might not be the best idea.

I truly liked riding the buses in Rio de janeiro; they run with a modicum of ease and frequency and were safe. At night I preferred to take taxis to places which were not in walking distance.
