Buenos Aires to Montevideo
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some up-to-date information on the best way to get from BA to Montevideo in late Jan/early Feb this year. I was thinking of fast ferry to Colonia, then a bus to Montevideo, but if there's a better or cheaper way I'd love to hear it! I know you can also go directly to Montevideo, so that's an option as well, but I think there are only a few crossings a day on this route? I also assume the advantage of paying in cash at the ferry terminal now doesn't exist, because the blue dollar is gone, so I might as well buy online in advance? Is there any particular company you would recommend or any tips?
It seems a bit far to go for a day trip and have read on here that it isn't worth going for just the day. I have a friend there and have made loose plans to meet for lunch or a coffee. Is it worth an overnight stay? Also, how is the safety aspect at the moment? I've heard it's worse than it used to be. I'm a 30-year-old lone female traveller...pretty streetwise and well-travelled, but obviously want to stay as safe as I can.

The Buquebus vía Colonia is fine, but I would stay over night.
ThankS to the new Government there is only one price for the Dollar now which makes things so much better.I Seldom fly between Bs As and Montevideo because of AirPort taxes.
Security wise both cities are going through dificultad times. You must use extrene caution.
Hopefully Argentina Will become what it was : a great country. They have shown the world What the "people" can do, to start almost a million volunteers have worked hard to ensure free elections And have made election fraud more difficult.

We travel between BA and Monte every year....since we have already enjoyed a day in Colonia, we take the direct ferry. If you are meeting for lunch, but have the option to spend a night, I would suggest doing that.
The OLD TOWN is not too safe...especially at night...but I feel quite comfortable in Uruguay (including Montevideo) otherwise.
Another thought...you could take the shorter ferry to Colonia and ask your friend to meet you there for lunch ?

I will tell you what my son did when he visited us in BA .. they took the Ferry to Colonia, wandered around then took a bus to Montevideo where they stayed at a really nice hotel ( not $$ ) and then took the ferry back from Montevideo.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not too sure about whether to visit Colonia or not... taking the ferry there and spending just a few hours before getting on a bus to Montevideo sounds like a good option. Is it easy to get to the bus station from the centre/touristy part of Colonia? Is it much better value to get a return ticket to/from the same place compared to going to Colonia and coming back from Montevideo?
