Beaches and Beach Hotels in Ecuador

Starting to research Ecuador for later thisyear. We would like to spend the last few days at a beach area just relaxing. We stayed at the Barcelo in Nicaragua and loved it. Anyone stayed at the Barcelo in the Salinas area? Or can you recommend others in the Salinas or other areas? Also, I'm seeing mixed reviews about how nice the beaches are/are not in Ecuador. What your impression of them?

We're looking for local hotels/area -- not ones filled with US tourists. At the Barcelo in Nicaragua, we were just about the only non-Nicaraguans and that was perfect. Accommodations were very nice, the food was local, and the price was very good.
