Bariloche car rental

I would appreciate any recommendation regarding a good car rental company in Bariloche please? Any tips regarding type of car and insurance would be helpful. Thank you Sabbin

We used Hertz for a one way rental from San Martin de Los Andes to bariloche driving through the seven lakes area (beautiful!) plus driving in and around Bariloche and San Martin. we found them to be helpful and pretty reasonable in terms of cost (plus they were one of the few that would allow a one way rental). Four of us rented a very small Volkswagen (cant recall the name but a bit smaller than a Polo). When we first saw the state of the roads through the seven lakes area (i.e. v. rough!) we wished we had got a larger car but is coped well and was fine. Most of the roads (approx 70%) in Argentina are unpaved but we drove all over the country and experienced no real problems. Be aware that most acrs in Argentina seemed to be manual transmission (I think americans refer to them as "stick shift") so you MAY find it difficult to find an automatic.

Get teh comprehensive insurance cover and do check any excess which can be quite high. Pay by credit card (this can provide added protection if you have problems (at least it does with UK based cc companies)and check with your cc company as some offer additional insurance cover. Look at the small print in the contract.

Crellston means a VW Gol. Hertz seems reliable.

Automatic transmissions mostly not available in rental cars here, or extremely expensive.

Have a great time in our country.

Sabbin: you ask if the Chevrolet Corsa is large enough, but you haven´t said how many people are in your party.

The Corsa (cat. E) would be OK for up to four people, unless you have a LOT of luggage.

The Cat. B is the one Crellston rented and I'd say it's OK for two or three people.

Yes, Millet represents Hertz in Argentina.

Have a great time in our wonderful South.

Avrooster, I appreciate it. There will be 2 of us. We were going to stay at La Chiminee in San Martin for a few days but they tell me they will be closed for renovations. Could you recommend a nice hotel in San Martin please? Thanks Sabbin

Hola Sabbin,

We stayed in In San Martin de Los Andes in February:

La CASA de EUGENIA www.lacasadeeugenia.com.ar

1 night @ $155.00 for Standard Room. I would ask for a step up room as a couple of the rooms seemed a bit small. Ours was lovely and large. The Casa itself is attractive and situated just at the foot of the mts. We could walk to the center and there is parking on the street. Breakfast was very good. We enjoyed staying there.

Just to add a note about our car rental experience in Bariloche.

We rented from NORTE a SUR CAR RENTAL.

PLUSES: We had excellent pre-arrival communication with Max (very good English and prompt replies) at Norte a Sur. We rented a Chevrolet Mariva for 4 people: Rate for 5 days @ $ARS 1650,00: pick up and return at Bariloche Airport with no extra charge: There was no deposit required. The car ran with no mechanical or tire problems; the AC was fine. The charges were as agreed.

MINUSES: The young man who brought the car to the airport was LATE - sufficiently so that we began to seiously wonder. He was LATE again for the drop-off. He spoke NO ENGLISH, which was OK, as our wee bit of Spanish sufficed, but none would have been quite a challenge. There was a BROKEN LOCK on the trunk (with luggage for 4) which he did not explain - the owner of our first B&B stop called them, and we got the jury rig to open it sorted out.

So, no major complaints, just annoyances.

Good luck.

Hi all,

we rented from El Cesar Car rent. Just no words... only disgust.

Please see below the email I sent to them after we got back.

"Dear,

all of us have finally got back home from lovely Argentina where we truly enjoyed every moment ... except when we dealt with you.

Please believe me that we hired a lot of cars in different countries ranging from small cars to sport cars to expedition vehicles without any problem. You may say that Argentina is a special case, but we would respectfully disagree given that we had reasonable rental experience in El Calafate.

Unfortunately we cannot say the same about you.

Let us please elaborate.

1) On our arrival you squeezed 5 of us with the luggage into one car because you had to get back into town as well. Fine...most companies charge for airport delivery, but the reluctance to spend 100 peso after you have done 2,000 USD business with us is a bit ridiculous. Note that such extra cost was not mentioned to us at the time you provided a quotation, but was mentioned separately after the deal had been made.

2) The car started to show over-heating problems as soon as we were 300 km from Bariloche. Ok, fine, I understand the distance, limited infrastructure etc, but when we called you you did not suggest anything better than to bring the car to 'authorized' VW service which was 500 km away from where we were. By agreeing to rent a car to be taken to Mendoza which is 1,300 km away you should have a had a more solid issue resolution plan in mind. Statement like 'the car is new and should not have any problem' does not stand as such.

3) We paid for 10 and 5 day rental which translated into 2,000 and 1,000 km allowance respectively. However, you interpreted it very differently (and your logic is beyond logical comprehension) which meant 200 km less on each rented car. What is worse your arrogant attitude deprived us of any explanation or response to our query. You simply took the advantage of holding the credit card information.

4) Finally - I agree with the windshield crack, but all reputed car rental companies would provide some proof of actual cost of repair if it is less than the deductible. It does not surprise us that you did not bother even to attempt to do what the better companies would normally do.

I perfectly understand that any legal recourse against you is not possible not least because the contract was made in Spanish. However, we will make sure that we will provide this feedback on the web resources available to us and hope it will save prospective travelers from trouble dealing with you.

It is not huge cost for us anyway, but what upsets us more is your attitude and the way you do business. If there was any bad moment during our 3-week trip in Argentina (which again was fabulous and we met so many wonderful people) it was due to you.

Without regards"

Danila: You became a forum member just to report about your experience with "El César car rent", which is OK, but I'm sure readers would like to hear more about your "fabulous" trip and the many "wonderful people" you met.

A proper Trip Report, including both the good and bad parts of your Argentine experience would be great.

Just a complaint, which is only the copy of an e-mail you sent to a bad business, tends to be disregarded by readers.
