apartment or hotel
hello,
I'm interested in anyone's experience who has rented an apartment as opposed to staying in a hotel in Buenos Aires for more than 4-5 nights. I plan to be in Buenos Aires with my wife in March 2015. Thank you for any advice.
Nick

We rented a one bedroom apartment through BYTArgentina for a month at the end of a long around the world trip. We decided that it would make a nice change from moving from place to place and to be able to cook our own food.
It was very economical for a month but I think it could be quite expensive just for a week as they seemed to load the rates for shorter stays. You would almost certainly need to pay in USD cash and the deposit is likely to be large - I recall that we had to pay $2000.
The apartment itself was nice enough although not as large as it appeared online!

As said above by top poster crellston, the convenience of renting an apartment versus staying in a hotel is directly related to the length of your stay.
As you only say "more than 4-5 nights" this is not quite clear in your post.
I'd certainly go for the apartment if you intend to stay for a week or more.
There are a few apartment rentals which can be paid for in ways other than cash.
I disagree with top poster crellston about the size of the security deposit. I'm a local, which means I don't have personal experience renting short-term, but U$S 2.000 sounds to me like too much.
I suggest you ask one of the better-known short-term apartment rental firms for a quote.
Anyway, bringing cash and selling it at the "blue" rate (many threads on the subject) will save you over 40% on anything which can be paid with a CC, including your hotel, but not the apartment rental.
I'm going to post about an article in the WSJ telling all about how cheap it is to eat out here, if you use the "blue" rate.
Have a great time in my town with your DW, nicolos1.

We have rented apartments, in BsAs, successfully, for eight years running.
BA Habitat, Reynolds Propriedades have been efficient and honest and excellent to deal with. Friends have done well, for shorter stays, with AirB&B.
Just know that you must bring in $$ to pay the rental on arrival: never been a problem for us, we take a Remis (Tienda Leon, World Car or VIP or another)directly from EZE to the apartment...do a very careful check over of the apartment and assure ourselves that the accommodations match the pictures and words on the website, pay the money and .... settle in.
Also, there will be a required security deposit: we have never had any problem getting all of it returned on our last day - but then again, we have always dealt with very reliable agencies.
Enjoy your stay.
