How coincidental! Literally, just got back from Trocones this morning - most excellent place on earth to visit - but remember, we experienced it in early spring and I don't know about the weather and bugs in June (definitely hotter though)...the road from Zihua to Trocones is absolutely safe as is that whole area, especially Trocones...there are many beaches to choose from, so no worries with the kids - remember to check out the wide beaches in Majahua (just up coast from T.)...definitely stay at a resort or casa on the 2-3 mile stretch north from the town of T. - we stayed at the Casa Cala Linda which is literally next to Casa al Mar (both have websites with great owners and the caretakers, Roberto and his wife Ellie are very friendly and efficient and around every day to clean and Roberto speaks very good English and is helpful with local advice/recommendations...one suggested restaurant is Martha's (on the beach) in Majahua (fresh seafood and excellent guacamole)...as an aside, we didn't find a really good margarita in either town...open air: most eateries are open air but it looked like the nicer resorts and casas had roofed rooms...possibly more later...good luck and you should get excited as it's a great place for a family outing!...Bosko

The surf is Very rough with lots of undertows so I have no idea where the previous answer came from.
Zihua's Madera Beachh is by far the best beach for kids in the area. A gentle slope & no undertow make it excellent. Add in that it is the beach the locals use most which allows for lots of interaction with other kids makes it ideal. My first choice would be Brisas del Mar a most lovely hotel all suites with huge balconies & fabulous views.
Second choice would be The Irma.
Troncones is a lovely place to watch the wave action but only good for the most experienced swimmers or surfers.

PS I spend at least 3 months in the area every year.

Actually, with reference to the safety of the beaches at Majahua, we saw whole families playing safely in the shallow waters at the shoreline which in free of rocks - which leads me to re-emphasize my previously mentioned prejudice in favor of experiencing the local villages - if you want to play it safe with eateries, check out the Manzanillo Inn in that neighborhood - if you want to hang out safely with tourists and crowded beaches be my guest at Zihua...either way, you'll love the entire area

HMMM Rough surf & undertow would concern most parents IMO.
