Hey Fodorites!
Not too long until I head off to Mexico and Central America for 10 weeks! Only 14 sleeps to go!
Any last minute tips? safety? what to wear? places to avoid/visit? Border crossings?
Anything i really should pack? or leave behind..
I'm travelling overland for the whole trip from Mexico City to Panama City and everything in between, well except for El Salvador.
My question today though! What are laundry services like along the way? Should I be packing a clothesline and washing liquid or is it easy enough to drop a bag off somewhere and pick it later?
My itinerary doesn't have me in one place for more than 2 days or 3.
I am also taking along my netbook to update my blog and backup my photos as often as possible. Any tips or experiences with Wifi?
Cheers!

My packing list is #14 in the FAQ of the Thorntree forum:

I pack a clothes line made from braided surgical tubing - stretches and ties to a variety of objects, no pins needed because you tuck clothes into the braid. I use shampoo instead of packing laundry soap. In many areas you'll find places to have laundry done, though.
That is a LOT of ground to cover in 10 weeks! Good luck!
One more link - packing light will be really important since you'll be moving so fast:

Thanks heaps! I seem to get lost over at Thorntree haha.

And its been a great incite looking through your photos on Flickr, I hope to share some with you myself!
Don't worry about laundry. For a few dollars per load, you can get your laundry done almost anywhere. Check with hotel management -- if they can't do it, they will know someone who can. It can be done in a matter of hours if it's a sunny day (no dryers here).
I'd suggest carrying a small plastic bag of powdered laundry detergent. If you run out, it can be purchased in any grocery store.
You can wash some things in a sink and hang them to dry. I carry a few clothes pins. I used to carry a bit of rope, but never used it -- always managed to find a place to hang things.
More & more lower budget hotels/guesthouses have wifi now. If not, I've often seen cafes with wifi, some public libraries and parks in Mexico have wifi. I wouldn't do any banking on an open connection.
Lots of WiFi through out Mexico. Often for the price of a cup of coffee or at most 10 pesos per hour. Laundries everywhere at reasonable prices.
Our hotels in Costa Rica and Belize have offered laundry service pretty cheaply. Wifi has been pretty widely available as well.
