White hair in Valladolid....

As I was wandering around Valladolid, it dawned on me that I hadn't seen anyone with white hair (other than when I looked in the mirror). I kept checking, and I even asked somebody, and no matter how old a person was, he/she had black hair.

I didn't notice this until Valladolid, so maybe there are other places where this is not the case.

I saw some, Pegontheroad, but not many. Most of the white-, and even grey-haired, women and other older people I saw in Valladolid were either in the cathedral or were in or near their homes outside the main square. My guess -- which could easily be wrong -- is that those few who have survived to an old age are no longer sellers in the markets or engaged in activities that would bring them into regular contact with tourists.

That was my experience in most of the places I visited in the Yucatan Peninsula and Chiapas, though I met a couple of older women in their homes as part of a guided tour of Mayan villages outside of San Cristobal de las Casas.

I can't say whether what I saw was representative or not....

I did see one man in the bus station who had some threads of white/gray hair.

Who knows?

You are right, I think it has to do with skin pigmentation because there are quite a few people my age in Valladild and many of them seem to be stronger on the grey side than the white side...

Interesting observation.
Not the same but we've noticed that there aren't too many bald men here in Mx either.
In regards to grey hair we do see a fair amount of it here in Merida (I don't think I see too many white haired people). There's also a very large elderly population here. The local park in my neighborhood in loaded with them on Tuesday nights when they play big band and old style salsa music. Watching them dance is awe inspiring.
With all that said, Mx women are very conscious of their appearance. Many dye their hair, wear make up and dress very nicely.

Hola, Cybor
We're returning to Merida in January. You mentioned the local park where big band and old style salsa music is played Tuesday nights. Which park is that? Santa Lucia has music and dancing on Thursdays and we just loved going to that, would be interested in finding more.
Thanks,
Neph

Hola Nepheline,
The parque in Santiago (my hood) is the one that has music and dancing every Tues night. They set up a stage and chairs.
You'll find outdoor craft vendors on those nights.
It's right next to all the outdoor food vendors.
Just about all the parques in Merida have a night of music and dancing on a regular basis. That's not including all the special music and entertainment throughout the year.

Cybor - Thanks for the info - we'll definitely add Parque Santiago on Tuesday evening to our to-do list. About what time would you suggest we arrive? (As I recall, the music and dancing in Parque Santa Lucia was in the daytime).

My hair is pure silver. My hairdresser would be upset if I dyed it, because she loves the color.

I like it, too. I wouldn't dye it because it wouldn't match my face, which looks like it goes with silver hair. I wish I had more of it, especially in the back, where I sometimes feel compelled to do a comb over.

Good for you, Pegontheroad! My hair isn't silver (yet), but I have absolutely no interest in dyeing any one of my silver hairs. To each his/her own!

I, too, have white hair. I really do not like being almost the only person like that. But dyeing white hair - thin hair - is a disaster. ROOTS!

In Istanbul I never saw white hair. I asked a native and he said that the women all pay around $5 each weekend to keep up the black color.

When there I was walking through a very crowded market area heading toward a particular destination. Later that day I ran into friends who said "We saw you today at the market" - from the bus they were riding in! How did you know it was me? The white hair in a crowd of many hundreds.
