Where to start backpackig?

Ok anyone out there recommend a place to start? Me and my BF are going for a month next year and want some ideas on where to start and end? we want to see beaches and relax all the way to party and scout history. Also if you know of any good books for hostels and travel in the latin-america area would be great! thanks!

Run don't walk to www.lonelyplanet.com to their forum called The Thorn Tree.

I make great use, utility and entertainment, from the internet in planning my trips, but there's no substitute for a good book. My advice is to buy a few guide books (check out the reviews on www.amazon.com ) and get a feel for your options, then narrow it down and buy a guidebook specifically for that country (or country) from there. I'm heading back to Guatemala this summer but have also loved previous trips to Honduras and Belize - each unique and fascinating. Happy trails!

If you are considering Mexico, check out "The People's Guide to Mexico" by Carl Franz. Not a regular guidebook, more a how-to, about traveling around in Mexico, tips of places to go, how to approach things. It's not aimed toward any one group of people or travel style (not specific to backpacking but is about thoughtful, sensitive, and budget, travel).

Lonely Planet is always a good place to start for any budget trip - maybe you can get a copy of their guide to whichever country(s) you are thinking of out of the local library.

The Rough Guide is also brilliant. Feel free to visit the Thorn Tree, but to be honest it usually helps if you have some idea of what you want to do before posting a question.

In a month you could do a circuit from Mexico City down through Guatemala and Belize and back. Flying into DF and out of Cancun would give you more time in Gua and Belize.

Or just concentrate on Mexico, or wherever. You need to decide what appeals to you this time - a lengthy stay in a small number of places, or more of a road trip.

Stating the obvious here, but travelling in CA is much more fun if you speak some Spanish. If you are fluent, then lucky you!!

At least in Mexico, oftentimes a normal basic hotel will be your best and cheapest option, especially with 2 traveling together. There are hostels in some locations but not as many as in other parts of the world.
