For a city hotel, we like Grano de Oro - built in an old mansion with a good restaurant on site; for something just outside the city with beautiful views and great grounds, we love Xandari. Some parts of San Jose are rough. I'd take a cab if you go out at night.

The airport actually is in Alajuela. An inexpensive option is Orquideas Inn. Xandari is awesome! A little further away(20 min.) is Hotel Bougainvillia with wonderful grounds for relaxing and birdwatching. On my next trip to CR I am trying the B&B, Casa Bella Rita.

We stayed at the Marriott at the end of our trip - it is on a coffee plantation and has great restaurants and terraces to enjoy a drink after traveling or sight seeing. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable.

They had a free shuttle to the airport as well.

Forgot to mention, Xandari gives one free trip to or from the airport via their shuttle.

Xandari is beautiful, but pricey. Didn't stay there but had dinner. I prefer smaller places and stayed at two different places on our trip to CR last year, one night each.

One night was at Alegria B&B which is very close to the airport in Alejuela. George is a gracious host and will help with transportation. Only accepts cash, but it is extremely reasonable and includes a very nice breakfast. There are only 3 room and we stayed in Las Flores.

Our last night we stayed at Casa Bella Rita (the one rpowell mentioned above) and it was lovely. Rita and Steve have a lovely home and it overlooks a canyon and the hills of Santa Ana. Breakfast is included along with one trip to the airport.

We stayed at Casa 69, I liked being able to stay right downtown and experience it a bit. The owner makes it feel like home!
Also it was cheap!

I love Casa 69 as well. A beautiful little oasis in the city. Tons of plants and amazing original artwork. Super comfy beds and wonderful owners.

I would go with Alajuela over San Jose without question. We van recommend Orquideas Inn from personal experience, but I'm certain Xandari and the others are fine choices too.

Orquideas is a good choice too and I recommend it all the time but Casa 69 has much more of a boutique/intimate feel. The interior is actually much prettier than Orquideas but of course doesn't have the grounds and pool that Orquideas has.

We just got back from Costa Rica last week, we stayed at 3 places close to the airport due to our flight being canceled due to IRENE.
1st was the Adventure Inn, clean ok but very transient.(didn't love it)
2nd Hotel Robledal - a small cute family run hotel, nice small family feel rooms are small but clean and food is good. We liked it here.
3rd: Country Inn and Suites, by the airport, a big chain hotel but nice. Our room was great a 1 bedroom plus loft and sitting area for $110.
