Where to go in Costa Rica for adventure?

Hello!

I was hoping I could get a few recommendations on what towns/cities/beaches/attractions to go to in Costa Rica. We are all adventurous people and would love hiking, exploring, etc. We arent huge on touristy locations, and would be more interested in finding the hidden gems of the country. We are going in June.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Corcovado very beautifull and remote - maybe Bosque del Cabo.
Uvita off the beaten track lots of activities, Horse riding, cannoning, zip lines, water rafting about 1 hour drive to Manuel Antonio, we took a day trip to Corcovado and zipline in Hacienda Baru and stayed in TikiVillas jungle hike to the rainforest can't say enough about them.

Arenal lots of tourists but many fun activities, Arenal Observatory Lodge geat to stay.

If you like off the beaten track avoid Jaco, Tamarindo & many beaches in Guanacaste though there are some exeptions.

The Osa Peninsula/Corcovado is great for hiking and adventure. Also check here www.corcovadoguide.com

Look at this website www.costarica-nationalparks.com

Consider Mt Chirripo or Parque Amistad.

In the north, Bahia Salinas near La Cruz for almost deserted beaches and windsurfing.

Miravalles Volcano area - www.volcanoadventuretour.com Lots to do and not as crowded as some other locations.

Tortuguero -- www.tortuguerovillage.com

One option is to stay in the Sarapiqui area (Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui) and spend some time hiking and on the river and then arrange a trip up the river to the Nicaraguan border and down the Rio San Juan to Tortuguero.

There are many, many places to go that are not touristic. But without knowing how long you will be here, it's hard to recommend any kind of itinerary.

Hi. I've lived in Costa Rica for 9 years, and have traveled extensively around the country. The truth is--EVERYWHERE is beautiful in Costa Rica. However, as the country is the size of West Virginia, what people don't expect is the travel times between destinations. For this reason, choosing where you want to go is important, if your time is limited. Hitting Tamarindo, Arenal, Montezuma, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Puerto Viejo, and Corcovado sounds great--but would take you a month to do it properly. I recommend choosing a couple of diverse destinations--ie a mountain destination and a beach destination, and then exploring them well. The Arenal/Monteverde area is the most popular mountain destination. For beaches--go to Manuel Antonio. It has beautiful beaches, a world-famous national park, and true rainforest with monkeys--unlike the dry, deforested areas of Guanacaste. Plus, you can do just about everything you'd want to do in Manuel Antonio (canopy tours, rafting, ocean tours, sportfishing, etc.).

They were going two years ago, so it's safe to assume they've already gone and returned.
