What's up with airfare?
What is going on with airfare to Mexico lately? I live in south Texas, but it's cheaper for me to fly to Nassau than to Cancun ($300 per ticket vs $700). I've looked on several places that usually have cheaper fares, and it's all the same. I was looking to go end of May, but the fares are crazy all the way out until August. Am I missing something?

Hmmm.
You have to check every day - they slide them in there. I live in NC and just got RT Raleigh-Durham to Cancun for $399. One day it wasn't there, the next it was, it filled up and poof - gone!
Check expedia.com, travelocity.com and download SideStep so that it runs every time you pull up another travel site.
Fly Mon-Th both ways.
Check AA, Delta and Continental for website only supersaver fares. Also look at Mexicana.com. Sometimes, if you get a air and hotel package - especially in summer, you can save a bundle. Good luck!

I read in the local paper in Los cabos that Air Mexicana is twisting the Mexican government arm because the American fares are lower so the Mexican airlines are losing money, so there is pressure on the American domestic airlines to raise their fares.

aquaria, where do you fly out of? From Houston, the best deals seem to be on Continental. Last week, I bought a nonstop flight to American from DFW for about $440 _ not cheap, but much better than the $700 it usually is. Not sure if that sale is still going on.

That's interesting about the mexican airlines, espiers. Until about three or four years ago, it seems like flying into mexico was just a bit more than a domestic flight for us (which kinda made sense, since in DFW we're closer to many cities in Mexico than we are to the east or west coast cities.) We now often go last-minute charter when we can, just because you can get there direct and for less than most of the majors.
