what's the best place to stay in Puerto Vallarta

wondering if we should stay in the marina area or the old town/los muertos beach area? we need nightlife, good restaurants.

Dixie, It's a completely personal decision depending on your travel 'style'...

I am totally committed to the old town/los muertos neighborhood (14 trips later!!). Because I love to walk everywhere & be a part of the local going-ons. There are so many good restaurants you will never be able to try them all! Quite a variety of clubs, again depending on what you're looking for. You will definitely know that you are in Mexico.

But if you are less adventuresome, more comfortable in an Americanized setting and enjoy the resort scene, then The Marina would be your place of choice.

You'll also find the south side of town a lot cheaper than the Marina area. The marina was built for the tourists, the south side was there before there were tourists here.

I recently read a r-e-a-l-l-y bad review of Los Arcos Suites over on http://www.puertovallarta.net

Go to the Puerto Vallarta Bulletin Board section. It was posted by "sioux4nott" dated September 19, 2002.

These are 3 hotels run by the same management. I don't want to discourage you because I LOVE this part of town, but have heard such mixed reviews about the particular two properties you have chosen.

Just to give you the other side of the equation regarding the Playa Los Arcos, I've stayed there 3 times and have never had a problem with a dark or dirty room. Matter of fact, after my 2nd visit, I liked my room so much that on my 3rd visit, I emailed them ahead of time requesting that same room and they had it reserved for me when I got there. And besided the restaurant there being rather mediocre, which I didn't care about, I have no complaints about the Playa. I have only seen the Los Arcos Suites and the Los Arcos Vallarta from the outside, but for as many negative things I've heard said about them, I've heard the same as positive comments. I suspect that if you took 4 people and had them stay in 4 different hotels, you would probably get 16 variations of reviews.

Do you have the number of the room you liked the best at Playa Los Arcocs? Maybe Dixie could request it specifically.

I certainly understand & totally agree about differing opinions, but (I read alot of posts & have spent a LOT of time in PV) have never heard as many complaints, and specific bad reports about any of the many many other hotels around that neighborhood.
