What to Wear in Rio in December?

We're excited to spend 2 weeks in Rio and our travel agent says dress like the natives -wear black, no sneakers or jeans to identify yourself. Really? I find it hard to believe that everyone wears black in 80 degree weather. Need advice from some who has been there. Will we need long sleeves? Mosquitos a threat? Advice appreciated.

Doc, I go to Rio twice a year and the first time I was there was 22 years ago and yes I have heard all of these warnings from people too. The fact is and I have the proof is that many Brazilians wear sneakers, don't you think? Yes they do on Sunday when everybody is walking the promenade in Copacabana and Ipanema, power walking, jogging, they have socks and sneakers on. But they do not wear socks and sneakers when they are going to the beach, they wear sandals. But if you do not look like a dark latin type anyway, no matter what you have on your feet you will look like a gringo, don't you think? Does everybody wear black? In 105 degree temperature, I don't think so. Sure they wear jeans, they may have their own style of lighter low cut jeans but no matter what you wear they are going to know that your not one of them, believe me. The best thing is to just be cautious, no jewelry, keep your money in the hotel safe, don't flash your money and wear deet, mosquito repellent but in the tourist area you will hardly see a mosquito especially one carrying dengue. The repellent will just keep the normal bugs off of you believe me.Oh and don't wear long sleeves, you will be melting in the heat. Wear very light loose fitting clothing, just relax and be yourself and get a new travel agent.

I would say more people wear black in NYC than in Rio. Some people wear black in Riobut I obviously have't been to the area where your travel agent hangs out.

It would be sensible to take some long sleaves (but only one). You won't need them in Rio very much but it would be sensible to take them to the top of Sugar Loaf or to the Christ as the wind can get to you up there (although not much in December).

I have never been bitten by a mosquito in coastal Brazil but some of my friends have. Mossies go for some skin types more than others. Basically, they are not a huge problem.

Are shorts okay? And if so, for both men and women?

Margaret, shorts are just ok but dental floss is better. If you really want to be like a native wear a tonga or a speedo and nobody will notice you, you will fit right in and be a Carioca.

Shorts are fine, but as Joaquim says you should really get some Speedos as only Cariocas that surf wear shorts.
