Weather in Playa Del Carmen?

I am heading out this Monday (November 2nd) to Playa Del Carmen for 6 days. I checked the weather and it looks pretty horrible during most of our stay. My question is this: when the forecast says "thunderstorms with 80% chance of precipitation," does that mean all day thunderstorms? I have been to other tropical places where this only means an hour or two of a downpour, then completely sunny. I have also been places where this means night time rain and early morning rain.. I just want to be able to plan accordingly. I am aware that this is hurricane season, but some clarification would be nice.

Anybody down there right now? Or anyone who lives there that could shed some light on this confusing forecast?

Any help would be appreciated. It is not too late for us to back out of our trip, as we have insurance. If the majority of time would be spent in our hotel room, then it would not be worth it for me, considering we live in Portland, OR where we have plenty of rain!

Thanks!

Kara

NO! it means there's an 80% chance it will rain sometime during that day or night, not all day.

I vacation every year at this time in Puerto Vallarta (on the other side but similar weather). I never look at online forecasts in advance.

Short of a freak events (like hurricane Patricia that just blew thru) you aren't going to be stuck in your hotel room 24/7 at this time of year.

People are always posting this concern. You will typically get an hour or so of rain in the late afternoon - no big deal. We've been going to this area for the past 10 years - we've had maybe 2 really rainy days in that time.
There is a live webcam in Akumal (just below Playa) at locogringo.com.

I've been to that area several times in late November, and it typically may rain for an hour or two at least several days when I'm there. And then it does get clear again. Have an u,brella and some rain gear to be safe, like a real lightweight waterproof jacket with hood, or at least get one of those cheap rain poncho things to stick in your backpack or something. The look kind of stupid, like big garbage bags over you, but they work! And take up hardly any room, I always carry one in my totebag down there. They sell a lot of them to tourists caught unaware, also.

Interesting question because the rain here on the Yucatan usually comes in short afternoon spurts. However, for some reason lately and despite it not being rainy season, it has been raining throughout the day. Not everyday but some.

This can be tricky, but as some people have mentioned, it is often cloudy but not often rainy. You can get several days of cold and rain where you need to wear your jeans and a lite jacket especially at night (not unusual especially in Nov, Dec and sometimes Jan.) Although this trip is over for kara_fire it is worth mentioning that the best months (imo) are Jan, Feb March and April.
We own a condo in PA and must say that we very rarely watch or listen to the weather forecast while we are down there for the winter... the sun always seems to find it's way trough the clouds
