It is funny that you should ask...last year I went to Ixtapa-Zihua for vacation with a friend and after coming out of the water in Playa Las Gatas we realized that we both had red splotches all over. We asked the locals and they replied that it was because of the "suciedad del agua" (dirty water). I would stick to the beaches behind the hotel area in Ixtapa. Hope that helps...

We've been there twice and had no problems. Of course, the water is not as clear as the other side of Mexico, but we enjoyed snorkeling just the same. We found the best snorkeling at Ixtapa Island and also at Las Gatas Beach. Never heard anyone talk about the red splothches - hope that's a quirky thing that rarely happens because we love the place!

Mnay times I've stayed at Hotel Brisas del Mar, formerly La Madera, and swum in the Bay every morning and afternoon.
Myself I've never seen/heard of any kind of pollutant.
It is unfortunate that visiting Sailboats, none of them Mexican, discharge raw waste right into the Bay.
Good news is there usually aren't that many of them.
In the last 2 decades Mexican towns have made great strides forward in terms of waste treatment, this has led to cleaner water and a healthier populace.
