Visiting Historic Mexico

Am planning a last minute trip to Mexico and would like your suggestions on where to go to soak up some real culture. Not looking for the beach resorts and have only 3-4 days, but would like to see as much history as possible. Any suggestions on where to start?

If you only have a short time, advice on where to go would depend on your gateway city. You could, for example, fly in to Cancun, but then rent a car or take the bus to visit Mayan ruins and spend a little time in Merida.

If Mexico City is your most convenient gateway, you could consider Puebla, Cuernavaca, San Miguel, etc., and buses leave to these places I think right from the airport.

Forget Cancun if you don't want touristy. My suggestion is Guadalajara. It is a beautiful city and is considered to be the center of the Mexican culture. Great climate and very historical. You will love it.

My choice would be Oaxaca (city) for a three to four day trip. It is a city where one can explore much of Mexico's facinating history from ancient archeological ruins to important figures-Benito Juarez-in Mexican politics. Oaxaca has so much to offer including local indian art, culture, and a rich coloniel history that it should be a must for anyone interested in Mexican history and culture. I have been there twice(just returned 6/14) and would be more than happy to give you some more details if you email me directly.
