Tulum Condo?
My H & I are headed to the Mayan Riviera for well deserved week of R&R. We're trying to decide btwn staying in Akumal or Tulum. The beach in Tulum looks considerably nicer, but it doesn't look like there's many beach condos there - only bungalow type places with no electricity at times! We would really like to rent a nice small condo & there are several in Akumal. Can anyone recommend a place in Tulum? Also, how is the beach for swimming in Akumal - is it quite rocky? Thanks!

I don't believe there are any condo along Tulum beach. I hope it stays that way. The most georgeous beach anywhere in the world in part because it's still pristine. There are many great choices for ecoresorts from very pricey to very cheap and ahem, "modest".

It depends where on Akumal- some of it, on the south end of the bay, is rocky, but other parts are really nice.
The power lines for the beach places were taken out at some point (I'm assuming during a hurricane), so the whole Tulum beach road area is off-grid.
If we ever go back, we would probably stay in Akumal just so we could snorkel in the morning, then do something else for the day, then snorkel again after we were done. But we love that- if you want to lay on the beach, Tulum is exponentially nicer for that. Akumal beach seemed a lot more crowded than Tulum.

There are no condos on the beach in Tulum. There are some condos in the pueblo, but you are a stretch from the beach. In regards to the beach being more crowded in Akumal than Tulum, Sunday is the busiest day because locals have the day off and they come and relax on the beach. Akumal Bay is small so when there are alot of people it can feel more crowded, where sections of the Tulum beach are long spanning sections and feel less crowded because of their size.
Not alot of snorkeling to speak of Tulum.
