We just got home last week from Costa Rica and we had a great trip.
Flew into San Jose on Saturday and drove right to The Lost Iguana Resort, we LOVED this resort. The kids loved searching for frog every morning and seeing the toucans fly around during breakfast. Also got to see a Coatis on the grounds one morning. The hotel grounds are so nice, it doesn't have a big bustling resort feel which we loved. The room wonderful with a outdoor whirlpool and an amazing view. The restaurant food was good. We also walked up the Toucan path to the hanging bridges. We didn't get a guide but we did see a eyelash palm pit viper which was very cool...but of course we kept our distance.
Day 1: Sky Trek Zip lines and El Castillo Serpentarium, we had a great time doing both of these, we paid the few $$ extra in El Castillo for the guided tour which the kids loved because they got to hold snakes, frogs and lizards.
Day 2: Los Lagos Horseback riding and hot springs, we had a great ride and the hot springs very nice, they sort of have a fake feel but we enjoyed them. We were thinking about staying at this hotel when planning our vacation and are happy we didn't as it just has too busy of a feel for us.
Arenal Hanging Bridges
Day 3: Waterfall Rappelling (pure trek) which we did with our 11 and 8 year old kids and it's very safe (we are climbers) and after looking at the pictures again we did notice the kids didn't really rappel on their own, they were lower by the guides (but they didn't know that and we only know because of our climbing experience) so kids are totally safe on this adventure if you are thinking about doing it.!
then we went whitewater rafting with Wave Expeditions on the Balsa river we all had a great time and the river was fun.
then to relax after that busy day we went to the Baldi hot springs the kids loved the water slides!
Day 4: Cano Negro, we loved it here we drove ourselves as we rented a car. We finally found where to go and went into a restaurant where someone helped us set up a boat trip. (cost $20per person) and we were the only ones on the boat, the guide spoke a little English but enough to point out animals, we saw everything! spider, howler and white face monkeys, along with sloths, camion, lots of birds I would say this is a place to go early if you want to see animals! we were on the river for 3 hrs
Day 5...drive to San Jose Area, Stayed at the Adventure Inn, clean but we didn't really like this hotel too transient.
Day 6 stuck in Costa Rica due to the Hurricane our flight home to NY was canceled. Switched to Hotel Robledal we loved this small family run hotel.
Day 7 Zoo Ave, this was ok but over rated, I wouldn't go again.
Day 8: Poas Volcano //La Paz Waterfall Gardens, I would say this is amazing and not to miss it the kids loved La Paz and had a great time. Poas Volcano was very cool they like it also.
Day 9: Irazu Volcano this was nice and the drive cool but not as good as the Poas Volcano
switched hotels to the Country Inn and Suites and got a flight home the next day!
