My husband and I are planning on spending 3 nights in Mexico City in April . Our travel agent is recommending Four Seasons and St. Regis. Assuming no price differential which is a nicer hotel and better location? He then is scheduling us to go to San Miguel De Allende for 2 nights at Rosewood. Is that a good idea and how is the hotel? I could also use some recommendations for sites to see and restaurants to go to. We like to go to nice restaurants and shop, especially for nicer local art so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Wouldn't it just be easier to look the reviews of these hotels up on tripadvisor.com?? And if you don't trust the travel agent, why don't you just make the reservations yourself?

Neither of those two hotels are well located but of the two I would choose Four Seasons.

We liked our week-long stay at Las Alcobas a few months ago. You will be just as comfortable there and that would be my choice over the other two.

Rosewood has a great rep in SMA.

We just got back from Mexico and spent the first 6 nights in SMA. It's probably our favorite town in Mexico and its our 5- 6 visit there. It's approximately a 4 hour trip by driver or bus. SMA has a very active American/Canadian community and there is a lot going on. Lots of local art and shopping. If there on a Sunday, take the house tour. MWF at 10 am there is a walking historic tour which is very good.
Rosewood is a lovely, larger hotel in SMA. Didn't see the rooms, but the property is very nice & I think would be a great place to stay. It has a fabulous rooftop terrace. Great for drinks and apps esp at sunset.
In SMA we enjoyed meals at Heche en Mexico which is right near your hotel, La Posadita & had chiles en nogada at La Bugambillia.

The Four Seasons Hotel is right near Chapultepec park which has several interesting sites in it, the Anthropoligie Musuem and Museum of Modern Art. Its a lovely park. Its probably about 20 minutes by taxi to the historic downtown area and its 20-30 minute walk to Condesa and a touch closer to Roma, both of which have lots of cafe and dining area, though few if any sites. Looking at a map the St. Regis is on the other side of Reforma and may not be as convenient to the park and Condesa, but probably the same distance to the historic area downtown. We liked Condesa where we stayed, but probably not great for a first visit to Mex City.
Our favorite restaurant in Mex City was Azure. There is one in Condesa and one downtown. We also had a very nice meal at Maxim Bistro in Roma Norte, a very small restaurant that you will definitely need reservations for. Also here is the thread on Mex City restaurants.

Travelnhobo- I do trust the travel agent but always like to get confirmation from others. Obviously you can't go wrong with the St. Regis or Four Seasons, but location and other factors do come into play. I use Fodor's pretty exclusively in all our travels and rarely look into Trip Advisor.
ekscrunchy- Thanks for your input. We actually went with the Four Seasons as my company had a great rate there.

The four season and the St Regis are both on Reforma (on different sides!) are both large and grand. My family has actually stayed a couple of times in the Four Seasons. I have passed by Las Alcobas in Polanco and personally I would look into that option as well, especially if you want to walk around during the day and at night. Its a wonderful more residential area with shops and restaurants. It really depends what you want.
Also, Im sure you will love SMA

In San Miguel, Rosewood is 1st class, with no detail left untouched. It is a new property built to resemble something from the 1800's, but it succeeds. Awesome rooftop bar for sunsets. It's 2 1/2 blocks from the jardin. The other hotel in that range would be Belmond Sierra Nevada, a complex spread out over a few 1800's type homes. Both are top notch.
For restaurants, 3 that come to mind are The Restaurant @ 16 Sollano, and the San Miguel standby, Posadita. Hecho en Mexico has Tex-Mex comfort food with some of the best live music in town on Friday & Saturday.

You had mentioned local art. To me, and I'm just a "I know what I like guy", one of the nicer galleries is Galeria Gardner on Zacateros next to the Lebanese restaurant.

lasagna- I probably should have looked into Las Alcobas but since I got a great corporate rate at the Four Seasons I think I will stick with that.
