Travel to Lamanai

What is the easiest way to get to Lamanai? I know that day trips can be made from either Belize City or San Pedro, but would it be easier to travel to Orange Walk (and spend the night there) to experience the Lamanai river tour?

We will be traveling from the San Ignacio area to Ambergris Caye and was hoping to visit Lamanai along the way. We had hoped to get to the Cayes as soon as possible from San Ignacio, but now it looks like we might have to spend the night somewhere to visit Lamanai. Any suggestions for fitting this into our itinerary?

Orangewalk Town offers very, very little for the visitor. The hotels there aren't anything to write home about. You'd probably be best off just doing a day trip to Lamanai from San Pedro. It's as easy as going from Belize City.

Lamanai Outpost Lodge at Lamanai is excellent, but it's recently gone to an-inclusive pricing with almost unbelievable rates -- over US$1000 a day double.

Best bet would be to book the Lamanai day trip from San Pedro. Costs about us$135.00pp with return boat, entry fees and guided tour, lunch and soft drinks. I use www.tanishatours.com for my clients.

Thanks. I've looked into Tanisha Tours and it looks great. I didn't realize how easy it was to travel from San Pedro. It looks like that is what we are going to do. Do you know if we have to book these tours in advance? Or can we book this tour once we get to San Pedro?

On another note, thanks to Lan and Katie - I have read many of your previous posts, and they have been a big help to me planning this 2 week Belize trip.

Check out the Tropic Air trip - through the TA web. It is excellent. Cost is very reasonable. Fly from SP, probably as the only passengers, taxi to river, take cruise with your private guide (all this is included in price), arrive at Lamanai by 9, beat the crowds, have a ball, eat a great lunch, cruise back to landing strip for return to SP and you are on the beach by mid afternoon. It is a real treat.
