I have the option of catching a flight from Guatemala City to Houston at 7:20 pm on a Thursday. To get to the airport by 5:00-5:15 pm, what time should I leave Antigua? I know the road to Guate is a busy one, but don't know how much the time of day affects travel times.

I would leave around 4PM to account for traffic usually get good rates with hotelcolonialgranada.com for pick up and drop offs.
I have read that it takes about an hour to get to the airport, so is that true irrespective of time of day?
I'd have a good book handy and leave at 3pm. Usually the traffic flows ok and can take as little as 45 minutes on a good day, but if there's an accident or a strike or bad weather or just extra heavy traffic and you arrive (along with other late folks) at 6:00 for a 7:20 flight you might have trouble checking in. For me, less stress =
I know that the ride is only about an hour, but on another forum a traveler advised to leave 4 hours early because traffic is very bad in the late afternoon. That sounded excessive to me, and I have a feeling her experience was atypical.
I think I will leave at 3:00. I would rather be a bit early than arrive a little late. Thank you both for your replies.
Traffic can be bad late afternoons. 3 p.m. is the absolute latest I would leave Antigua to make it there in two hours.
To make it there two hours before my flight arrives, is what I meant to say. I'm overly cautious about such things, but I'd even leave earlier than 3.
Better early than late. The airport has a food court and some shops for last-minute souvenirs.
Yes, I understood what you meant by 2 hours. I am cautious too. Missing a flight is a headache that I want to avoid (been there, done that). Thanks.
