Travel from Antigua to Tikal

Is it safe to take the bus? Or is a domestic train recommended? Could use some some recommendations here.

To get from Tikal to Antigua, you can take a second class bus from Flores to Guatemala City, then change buses in Guatemala for one to Antigua. I took the public bus from Flores to Rio Dulce (on the way to Guatemala City) and had absolutely no fears for my safety, except that the driver drove extremely fast around sharp curves while talking to his friends hanging out the door. We took a tourist shuttle from Rio Dulce to Antigua so that we wouldn't have to deal with changing buses, since you supposedly also have to change terminals in G.C. and it's recommended to take a taxi between them if you have a lot of stuff. The shuttle from Rio Dulce to Antigua cost $20 per person and took about 4 1/2 hours. This is much more expensive but faster than the public bus and they dropped us at the door of our hotel. You can probably get a shuttle all the way from Flores as well. Also, don't count on the schedules of any tourist shuttles being reliable -- they seem to like to wait around for as many passengers as possible.

I would suggest taking a bugs to Guatemala city and then flying to Tikal. Can be a long trip by bus or train.

I was in Antigua a couple of years ago attending Spanish school and there was no shortage of travel agents selling trips to Tikal.

Be sure to check around, as there were a variety of prices. I know it's been a few years, but we paid about $75 and that included a taxi/shuttle to the airport in Guat City (the driver even stopped by a hotel near the airport and let me leave my luggage) and the round-trip flight Tikal/Guat City. At that time, this deal was being advertised for $75-$125.

Do fly or you'll spend all your time on the bus.

Tikal is great, don't miss it.

Buen viaje,
Sandy
