Can you afford to fly? If you can you could fly to Belize City, to Flores, Guatemala (you'll likely want to visit Tikal anyway), then on to Guatemala City. If you're not planning to fly you can bus or shuttle from Placencia to the San Ignacio area (change buses in Belmopan), spend a few days exploring that area if you have time, then shuttle or bus to Flores or Tikal. From Flores you can bus overnight to GC or break the trip up. If you can swing just one flight I'd have it be the one from Flores to GUA. Happy trails!

Either way, that's still a long haul. A flight to Flores/Tikal from Belize is not that expensive. Then you can fly from there to Guatemala City. Buses in Belize are not the swanky affairs you can get in Mexico.

There are a number of options. First Class with washrooms. 2nd class that is like a greyhound with no washrooms. 3rd class or chicken buses that are old school buses or my favourite collectivo's. None of these are that expensive. My guess from memory is $150.00 max to $20.00 for collectivo's to the Belize border near San Ignacio. From the border to Belize City is about $65.00 depending on your travel we did it for $35. Travel rule #1 look poor, old clothes scruffy back pack, keep electronics hidden( you can have you headphones showing as everyone listens to music. No flashy jewelery, no big bundles of cash showing. From Guatemala City you can go north or east and take a boat to Belize. Have fun and don't travel at night unless it is one a bus where the driver has an armed guard like a first class bus. Have fun and don't let me scare you just be aware of your surroundings as you aren't in the US. We love to travel in CA and have never had a problem, the people we met are happy but they do make a living off tourists.
