transport from Cancun to Mayakoba (playa del carmen area)
Hi we are travelling to mayakoba on Wed- Hotel tranfer from Cancun airprot is $125 per person and since there are two of us- seems like a cab (approx $75 I think) makes more sense. I know nothing about cabs in Mexico- is it safe, are there certain ones to take /avoid? I know there is a bus but I am pregnant so don't want to deal- want direct transport.
Also - are car rentals/driving around down there safe? looking to maybe visit the ruins but again- dont know a lot about the roads down there.
Thanks!

You can call a taxi from the airport or you can take a shuttle outside of the terminal directly to your hotel. The bus will not stop at the Mayakoba.
Car rentals - go with a reputable company, take all the insurance offered, drive the posted speed limits, make sure the car has valid tags, a spare tire which is filled, and note anything that does not work. Note all damage to the vehicle before you leave. I also took pictures of the vehicle with my phone. TAKE THE INSURANCE! It is very expensive but, in Mexico, if you have an accident you will go to jail until they sort out who was responsible.

I've used USA Transfers 3 times, only $130 or so for from 1-3 people airport to Akumal so bound to be less to the Mayakoba area, check them out, reputable business, safe drivers, clean vans and ontime. They will also make a free stop at the 7-11 for beer and water if you ask (it is polite to offer to buy the driver a soda or water).
I've also rented cars, used Easyway 3 times, write them for a quote to include all insurance including the zero deductible.
