Too ambitious: Peru in a week??

Hi there,
Was landing Sun eve in Lima Aug 24th and (I think) leaving on Monday Sept 1. Was planning on doing the 4 day Inca Trail trek which only leaves 3 days to see the rest. Was thinking of something like this: Sunday evening in Lima, Monday Cuzco, Tues-Fri Inca Trail, Saturday see the condors in Colca Canyon and somehow get back to Lima to leave on Monday. Is this possible??
Any opinion is greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance, Jean

Well, Jean, I suppose it's possible, but you're going to severly test your body's limits. I don't know if you already live at a high altitude, but I don't, and I certainly would not have been ready to hit the Inca Trail the day after arriving in Cuzco. I found the 11,000 foot altitude left me pretty tired and out-of-breath for the first 24 hours. In fact my wife and I moved down into the lower Sacred Valley to acclimatise before doing the Inca Trail. And even though I'm a reasonably fit 44-year-old, I was pretty wiped after doing the Inca Trail and needed a fairly slow day after that. Let's say you return from the Inca Trail on Friday. I'm fairly certain you won't get a flight to Arequipa until the next morning. And most tours to the Colca Canyon are overnighters that leave in the morning and return the following evening. There are one-day trips to the Canyon but you're going to spend over 8 hours in a van over some very rough roads for (if you're lucky) a half-hour of condor-sighting. My humble advice to you is forget the Colca Canyon. Fly to Cuzco, acclimatise for a day, preferably two, then, if you've still got a day before you need to fly back to Lima, take a local bus to Pisac or Ollantaytambo; both are wondrous Inca sites. Have a great time!

Actually I forgot a phrase: after 'acclimatise for a day, preferably two...' I meant to add 'then definitely do the Inca Trail - it's fantastic! Then if you have a day left..."

I was in Peru backpacking some years ago and I agree with sirius.
If you can only go for only one week then I would forget Colca Canyon and I would suggest spending the entire time in and around Cuzco. We spent 3 weeks throughout Peru and I wished we'd had more time in Cuzco.
The culture, history, archeology etc is all fascinating. There are lots of great towns around Cuzco and with the markets, ruins Macchu Pichu and the Inca trail there's your week!
I didn't do the Inca trail but I saw my brother's pictures and I was at Machu Pichu at the time of year you're thinking of going...there was alot of rain and the hikers looked soaked!
Personally I don't think you need much time in Lima. I enjoyed the city because of the wonderful museums but you could hit the highlights quickly or just stay one night passing through.
Hope this helps!
