We reserved two standard, connecting (adjoining) rooms at the Tabacon Resort for our recent trip to Costa Rica. When we arrived we were "upgraded" from our standard rooms to superior rooms that were side-by-side (without interior connecting doors). We didn't realize what had happened until we saw our rooms.
Apparently, the standard rooms are the only ones with interior connecting doors, but they do not have a view of the volcano from the room.
Well... the superior rooms that we were taken to were in a string of one-story rooms, separate from the main hotel. The rooms had low ceilings, cheap tile and gaudy bright yellow paint on the walls. The only "view" of the volcano was from the patio. In other words, you couldn't see the volcano through the windows of the room; you needed to step outside anyway.
I complained due to the lack of connecting doors to the rooms, and, after some reluctance, was taken to the main hotel (attached to the lobby) to second floor "standard" rooms. These rooms were beautiful and quite unlike the "superior" rooms which cost more money. Our standard rooms were much, much larger than the superiors and had a HUGE bathroom. There was beautiful cherry-wood furniture and crown molding on the high ceiling. We had a balcony with a lovely garden view.
To see the volcano, all we had to do was step out the front door of the room and look up.
My advice? Save your money and skip the superior room. The superior rooms we saw looked like Motel 6. Request a standard room in the building attached to the main lobby. You won't be sorry.
