Thoughts on Cayo District tours/accommodation options

we are a young couple (26 and 27) heading to Belize at the end of December - mid-January. We are trying to figure out some good options for tours/lodging in the Cayo District. We've looked extensively at a variety of jungle lodges and hotel accommodations but aren't sure whether the best option is to go with an all-inclusive tour package at a jungle resort or stay in either San Ignacio, Belmopan, or another town in a nice, but not all-inclusive hotel and then choose our own tour companies.

While we are on a budget, we are looking for an option that gives us a good place to stay but also gives us the opportunity to go on the most tours and see the most of the jungle in Belize.

Thanks!

I would suggest a jungle lodge in Cayo, outside of San Ignacio town. Many in different price ranges, long the rivers and in the Mnt Pine Ridge.

I'd prefer San Ignacio, and the Cahal Pech Village Resort (http://www.cahalpech.com/); really nice grounds and great views above town, right next to the Cahal Pech ruins (which I think is a must see in the area, and only takes a couple of hours to wander through). There are many reputable companies offering tours of all the sights in the area to choose from; I wouldn't go with a package. (San Ignacio is also an excellent departure point for a day trip to Tikal in Guatemala.)

We loved Chaa Creek; we got a deal for it on Luxury Link which made it a lot more affordable. You might check sites like that. We did our day trip to Tikal from there with PACZ Tours, and they were very good.

The camp that hopefulist mentions is part of Chaa Creek.
