The safety of travel to Mexico
As a long time winter resident of Cozumel, I am often asked about the safety of traveling to Mexico. Here is the latest U.S. State Department advisory -- providing a more detailed assessment of popular tourist areas.
The warning, dated Feb. 8, replaces one that had been in place since April 22, 2011. It notes that "millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year for study, tourism, and business ... there is no evidence that Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) have targeted U.S. visitors and residents based on their nationality. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major trafficking routes."
<b>No advisories are in effect for the state of Quintana Roo (Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum), </b>southern Baja California (Cabo San Lucas), Guanajuato (San Miguel de Allende and Leon), Oaxaca (Oaxaca, Huatluco and Puerto Escondido) and Chiapas (San Cristobal de las Casas), as well as Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta and nearby Riviera Nayarit.
So.....the weather is beautiful and we are all safe and sound. Hope this helps alleviate a few worries.

THANKS for this update, TC!! Fantastic news that they finally updated the warnings!! The hard working Mexican people around here NEED and deserve the tourism business that this wonderful country can offer them.
I am currently in the Riviera Maya and am leaving from Cancun tomorrow and flying for $80 one way to Puebla on Volaris, then after a few days in PUbela, bussing to Tlaxcala and then home from Mexico City. This area of MX is a great jumping off point for travel to other places in MX. Many nonstops from Cancun to great places like Guadalajara (and you can then bus easily 3 hrs from there to Moreila and Patzcuaro, I have done that), Puebla, and other places (like Oaxaca, we did that in Nov.) by way of a stop in Mexico City.
I feel as safe here and in all of those areas of Mexico as I do at home. And I speak only enough Spanish to get around (high school Spanish, although I am working on getting better language skills).
