We are planning a trip in Feb. Would like the pros and cons on the properties- Royal Playa and the Excellence. Yes there is a price difference, but which offers the better food- views- beach- location to area attractions (whatever that may be), service and cleanliness. All suggestions are welcomed.
The Royal Playa del Carmen or The Excellence Riveria Cancun

We have stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen, but not Excellance. We tend to chose more budget friendly AI's, so the RPDC was an upgrade from our usual vacations. We liked it. The food was good, the pool is nice, the beach was OK. We went 2 weeks after Hurricane Dean, so it needed some help. It's probably fine now. The location is perfect. A 5 minute walk to 5th Avenue. Tons of resturants, shopping and entertainment. We like that every room was a suite and we didn't have to pay extra money to get those features. We chose the lowest room catagory and still got the in room jacuzzi, stocked frig and liquor dipensers. Some resorts make you pay extra for that in a higher room catagory.
I think Excellence is a nicer resort, which makes the cost higher. From pictures, the rooms look nicer and do have a few more amenities. I don't really like all the foo-foo stuff, so don't want to pay extra for it. It's a matter of preference. I like the location of RPDC. Just more things to see and do off property that is within walking distance. I don't think you could go wrong with either.
We have stayed at the Excellence in Cancun the resort is great it is spotless the service was wonderful and the food is really good. The water did have some seaweed but was clear and you could see the fish. The pools are great they go around the entire resort. This resort is only a short drive away from the airport. Also look on Trip Advisor for pictures and reviews of both resorts and see which one you think would suit you best. Have a great trip
I have stayed at RPDC. The location can't be beat as you are right in the middle of the action of PDC. If you like to go off resort, that's where you want to go. I have not stayed at Excellence, but have friends who have and have seen it from the beach. It looks very nice and my friends loved it. I have stayed at the Brand new Dreams Riviera Cancun next to Excellence and it was fantastic. I prefered it over RPDC except for location. You may also want to look into Secrets Maroma or Capri. The Secrets resorts are a fantastic chain too. Maroma has the most amazing beach and is not too far if you want to go into Playa.
