We will be on AC for four nights this summer to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We originally wanted Matachica, but I'm worried it may be too remote. I am trying to decide between Phoenix and Victoria House. High class problem, I realize.
We are in our mid-30s, not huge partiers but want to be close enough to town to go when we choose. We plan to have a mix of action and laid back time. My concerns with Phoenix: no beach, right in town (is town loud or seedy at all?). Concerns with VH: expensive, harder to get to town.
It seems as if the restaurant and spa at Phoenix are highly rated. What about VH? Decent spa or way overpriced? Restaurant?
I just want thoughts and opinions - all are welcome. Other suggestions are also welcome.

Victoria House is wonderful. It's not hard to get to town from there at all. They have free bikes you can use, or a taxi ride is only five bucks. They also have golf carts for rent if you want them. The beach there is beautiful with soft white sand, palm tress, hammocks, and their own little snorkel and dive shop that organizes tours. The food was very good as well. We ate at the bar and at their more upscale restaurant. We thought it was a very romantic hotel. Our room had a nice balcony that we loved.
Make that palm trees - sorry.
I would agree with volcanogirl...loved everything about VH.

10 min from town my fav...
I don't know if I would call San Pedro 'seedy'. I probably would call it 'gritty'. It's a small town where a good share of the residents don't have a lot of money. I wander all over town, often by myself. The beach is lined with hotels, condos, bars, restaurants, even a few churches. The local population and the tourists mix freely.
I'd have a hard time choosing between the Phoenix and Victoria House. Both have good restaurants, but, there's lots of other good restaurants in town.
I've always said if I was going to splurge, I'd stay at Victoria House. It just looks more like the kind of place you would stay for a tropical vacation. On the other hand, the Phoenix is pretty new and luxe.
