Tell me about Zihuatanejo, Mexico

1. Not as resorty as Ixtapa , which is almost next door.
2.Yes, it is a real town, many of those who work in Ixtapa live in Zihuatanejo.
3. Expensive.... not really, but there are some lovely five star places that are expensive.
Hopefully Stewbear can give you as better perspective.

When you go to Zihuatanejo , it is like getting two places for one!!
It is a 20 minute bus ride between Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo..... so you can zip between the two places daily if you want
Your welcome wetraveltoo much

Is it resorty? Is there a real town?
Ixtapa is 'resorty' and kind of fake. Zihua feels like a real Mexican town. They are a few miles apart with a ridge between them. Most American tourists stay in Ixtapa, which is mainly a strip of beachfront hotels with shops etc on the other side of the road, and a nice marina on the north side of town.

There are some deluxe resort hotels in Zihua with very high rates but you have other options.

I hate to post too much positive, because the town keeps growing too much for its own good and its infrastructure, but . . .Many of us who return year after year consider it our 2nd home town. I find it magical.
It is no more nor less expensive than any other beach town in Mexico. You can eat for pennies or dine in some of Mexico's great restaurants, with many places falling in the happy middle.
