Staying at the Sugar Beach hotel for 4 nights in early January and was wondering if we will need a car. We are staying in the Osa for the first part of our trip and this will be the more relaxing portion. We are thinking of visiting Rincón de la Vieja national park one of the days. I have read that many tours will pick up at hotels so that is an option. For those that have stayed here is it worth it to get a car to explore the area ourselves?

Absolutely, get a car.
This is a great hotel. One of the nicest things about it, is the isolation. There is no ambient light at night. If you get a clear evening, the star gazing is pretty amazing. And you have the lights of Flamingo flickering across the bay.
It has been awhile since I have been to this hotel. My only knock would be that the restaurant was pretty average. Which is surprising. Because the same investors also own the Orquideas Inn, which has a really good chef. But over the years, they have completed a massive renovation and rebuilding of this hotel. They have done a very good job of it.
But you will need a car to go into Flamingo or to Rincón de la Vieja. Taxi's would eat you alive.
You can also go to Flamingo or Potrero for dinner. There is a very nice little restaurant in Potrero. It is owned my an Irish couple, that were featured on a British reality show. The show was called something like "Change your life", and was about people that undertook a major change in their life. Like moving to Costa Rica to open a restaurant! The food was quite good, and they are very fun and interesting. We had a drink with them, and they showed us that wonderful Irish hospitality. Look for the Sleeping Dog Cafe.
Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice.

That must be the same Irish couple who took over Hotel Brasilito for awhile. Maybe not, but likely. They seemed very nice when I met them.
Agree with Pat, of course, that you will need a car. We have never stayed here, but have visited and checked it out. Looks great! We really enjoy this entire area and love gadding about from Playa Hermosa down to Tamarindo.
Have fun!
Make that three votes for a car. Stayed there a few years ago and loved it. We did go into Protrero at night for dinner. There was a good Italian place called Marco Polo. No idea if it's still there or not. Have fun.
