Spanish School in Tulum, Mexico

I want to recommend the Instituto Chac-Mool Spanish School in Tulum,
Mexico. The program is as excellent as their Cuernvavaca school but I
find Tulum more to my liking since it is a slower pace and easy to get
around on bicycle. The school arranged housing with a friendly local
family to help me learn Spanish and I also stayed a couple extra nights at
Jardin de Frida in Tulum (I can recommend as a clean and inexpensive place
to stay). I rented a bike at Iguana Bikes and would ride the bike trail
out to the beach most days.

My classes in June were only 2 people, although there were quite a few
others in different class levels. The instruction was a continuation of
the Spanish classes I had in Cuernavaca in 2009 and my teacher in Tulum I
remember from Cuernavaca. The school building is a lot different here in
Tulum though, it follows the very casual rustic feel that you often find
in this part of Mexico (along with modern condos). Sitting outdoors on
the porch in my tshirt, shorts and flip flops learning Spanish was my idea
of taking a class. It was warm (no air conditioning) but comfortable and
suited my need to get away from my sterile office environment.

Did you see any young kids at the school while you were there? I have been looking for a school where both my son and I can take Spanish classes and Chac-Mool is one of the only that I have found that has a program for very young (4-5yo) kids. Would love to hear more.

We were there last February and it was only adults but probably because schools at home were in session. The school was great, we were at the Cuernavaca, Mexico Instituto Chac-Mool a few years ago and loved it. Both destinations are worth a visit but very different. You might take a look at their website at www.chac-mool.com to find out about their programs for the children.

The Chac-Mool School is now out of business in Tulum but Meztli Spanish School there is very popular and has great online reviews.
