I have studied in Spanish language schools in Oaxaca, Guanajuato, San Cristobal and Playa del Carmen in Mexico, and in Antigua Guatemala. Perhaps the most effective and helpful school was Tierras Mayas in San Cristobal, in Chiapas, Mexico, where I am studying presently (in April and May of 2010.) The director, Romeo Mendez, has assembled a team of excellent teachers. His school is located on the stairway to San Cristobalito, a local church, so the view of the city is amazing! The city center is a few blocks away. The excursions he offers have been far more interesting than the usual tourist events: I have visited and talked with a Zapatista governing council, eaten with a family at a remote coffee finca, traveled to the site of the massacre of indigenous farmers by paramilitaries, visited a production center for Mayan medicine, and had access to films about local culture and talks with leaders of local pueblos. I recommend private classes for the greatest learning, although the teachers are very capable of teaching to classes as well. This school is not large, so it can offer personalized service I haven’t found at many larger schools. No review can answer all questions, so if you wish, you may write to me at wells107@comcast.net.

Timely post - I'm heading to San Cristóbal next month for a few weeks of study. Here are a few questions that spring to mind:
Are you living with a host family?
Can you recommend specific hosts or teachers?
Are all the teachers locals?
Did you research other schools or have you heard anything about them? Up to now, Instituto Jovel has been the one most recommended to me.
THANKS!!
