South America-what country would you pick for a family vacation?

Our family of four (two "kids" that are 24 and 21) are in the planning stages of trying to pinpoint a South American country to visit during December of this year,2006 for a vacation. None of us speak Spanish;we enjoy historical things, interesting culure, etc. and were thinking of perhaps Argentina,Peru or Chile. It would be for about a week or more.Any thoughts on where you would choose? The "kids" have said that if we went somewhere interesting that they would enjoy traveling along with us so would appreciate any help. Thanks!

As an Argentine, my answer is: Argentina, OF COURSE!

A few days in Buenos Aires and a few days in Southern Argentina.

I wonder what your early twenties "kids" mean by "interesting"?

In our South, I would suggest Bariloche, where December (before Xmas) is low season and the weather should be great. The best place to stay there is the Llao-Llao, but there are many lower priced alternatives.

I suggest further research, which should generate more questions.

That's exactly the correct answer, from my point of view.

Argentina ( Buenos Aires ) hands down!

You cannot be disappointed.

Thanks for the suggestions-ironically, we were leaning towards Argentina.Interesting to them is probably different than alot of other adults their age-both have lived in Europe for periods of time and have thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves into the culture, food and people of the various countries. They both are outdoorsy, enjoy historical things/places and of course, love trying new food.Could we do a trip down there in only a week? If only the two "kids" went together (brother-sister bonding trip since they always wanted to go on one together before they get married or go back to grad school)could they do Buenos Aires and then perhaps another city without renting a car? Safe to travel around on public transportation everywhere?
Is it true that they will need all these shots for entrance into Argentina? My daughter went to Equador last year so she has the shots but I was concerned that my son would need them?
I am going to hit the library for books to gather further info but do appreciate any thoughts and info!

dutyfree:

No shots for the cities.

Bs As can keep four adults solidly occupied for a week; you might take a day trip to an estancia and another day trip to the Tigre delta.

Colonia del Sacramento, across the River Plate in Uruguay, is an interesting day trip ( by ferry ) for many.

In Bs As you can eat well, see magnificent "pocket" museums, beautiful architecture, and shop designer shops for reasonable prices.

Enjoy,

Tio Pepe ;-)
