Should we rent a car in Guatemala?

We are 4 mature women, spending 9 days in Guatemala. Our plans are to go to Antigua, Lake Atitlan and Quetzaltengo. We would wait until we are ready to leave Antigua then get the car to drive to the others.

I like the idea of not spending time connecting on busses. We'd also would like to go to some of the small villages near Quetzaltengo and being to be flexible and stop along the way would be nice.

I have driven with my husband in Baja, Costa Rica and Ecuador so I have an idea about driving conditions but I wonder about the distances on narrow winding roads. Maybe they are not as far as they seem.

Do you think we could pay to park the car in Panajachel if we went by boat to a hotel on the lake?

What about renting a car in panajachel?

Thanks.
