Should I still go to Guatemala???

Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone has any updates on the situation in Guatemala following the flooding and landslides. It's very sad.

I am travelling on Fri next and my trip includes time in Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Tikal and then on to Belize. Do you think it would be OK to omit the Lake Atitlan part of the journey and spend more time elsewhere- perhaps head to Belze a bit earlier?
There are still very sketchy details available. I can't believe how little coverage this is getting over here in Ireland and from what I can see Europe- hardly a mention. Any updates? Do you think it will be OK to travel? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks

Cailin

I've heard that travel to Atitlan is impossible but that the rest of the country is OK. I would go.

Go, go go! I still am, except that my itinerary has been changed to exclude Lake Atitlan and surrounding region. I am leaving on October 24th for Guat and like you, will then be heading to Belize until Nov 8th. There are still plenty of things to do/see outside of Atitlan. From what I have been reading on Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Forum, Chichi may still be doable from Antigua. In the worst case, you could just head to Belize earlier, and that's not a bad idea since there is sooo much to do in Belize. Have you looked into cave tubing on Caves Branch River, ATM cave, Cockscomb...check out belizeforum.com

Good luck...don't give up!
